The story takes place in the Netherlands in the 17th century. There was a rich young man named Cornelius and an old horticulturist named Isaac, both known as tulip gardeners.  A young man had died in an alley that stretched just below where the Sheldon family compound was located. He had a wife and five children. If the Sheldons held a garden party, with lots of people and a band of musicians playing, the man's remaining family would hear the commotion of the party. Lala was considerate of their feelings and appealed to her sisters and their wives to postpone the party, but they were eventually persuaded and the party went ahead.
